What to expect as part of your learning and the subject matter we’ll be covering during the six weeks.

Taumata One is delivered 100% in English.
Pronunciation: Learn basic level pronunciation, including names, place names, simple words, and blended vowel sounds.
Introducing yourself: Learn how to introduce yourself and others.
Greetings and farewells: Learn basic level greetings, farewells and how to address people.
Basic questions: Learn how to ask and respond to basic level questions.
Instructions: Learn how to give and understand basic level instructions.
Basic Sentences: Learn how to use basic level sentences.
Numbers and Time: Learn basic level counting, the days, and months.

Taumata Two is delivered 25% in Māori
Introducing yourself: Learn foundational level methods of introducing yourself, others and how to talk about where you’re from.
Greetings and farewells: Foundational level knowledge of greetings, farewells, how to address people and talk about how you’re feeling.
Instructions: Foundational level of everyday instructions.
Numbers and Times: Learn how to use numbers in a sentence, the days and months, and how to tell the time.
Active sentences: Learn how to use foundational level tense markers to talk about what’s happening.
Descriptive sentences: Learn how to describe common objects and locations.
Negations: Learn how to negate active sentences at a foundational level.

Taumata Three is delivered 50% in Māori
Active sentences: Intermediate level ability to use the tense markers to talk about what’s happening.
Descriptive sentences: Learn how to describe common objects and everyday subjects at an intermediate level.
Actor emphatic sentences: Introduction of how to talk about who will do something or who did do something.
Instructions: Extend your knowledge of useful instructions at an intermediate level.
Negations: Expand on negation of active sentences at an intermediate level.
Statives: Learn how to structure stative sentences.
Location sentences – learn how to ask and answer questions about location.

Taumata Four is delivered 75% in Māori.
Active sentences: Demonstrate an advanced-intermediate level ability to correctly use active sentences.
Descriptive sentences: Advanced-intermediate knowledge of stative sentences.
Actor emphatic sentences: Reinforcing how to talk about who will do something or who did something.
Negations: Learn further methods of negating sentences at an advanced-intermediate level.
Location sentences: Learn to communicate where something or someone is at an advanced-intermediate level.
Why sentences: Learn how to describe an outcome created by someone or something.

Kura Ako is an online learning te reo Māori programme held over a six-week period, designed for level one beginners up to level four for more proficient speakers.
Whether starting your te reo journey, refreshing what you know, or continuing your ongoing journey, our courses are designed to encourage the use of te reo Māori in everyday life.

Registrations are open to anyone who is looking to learn or improve their knowledge of te reo Māori.

Due to limited space of participants, on receipt Kura Ako will confirm your enrolment. If we exceed the amount of spaces and we are able to keep your information for our records if any spaces become available. Alternatively you can book a place in one of our courses we will be holding later in the year.

LEVEL 1 Beginner - very little to basic te reo knowledge - course delivered in 100% English
LEVEL 2 Advanced Beginner – has some understanding of basic language, greetings and farewells, introductions and pronunciations - course delivered in 25% Māori
LEVEL 3 Intermediate - can understand more advanced instructions, identify numbers and times, can use active and descriptive sentences and use negations - course delivered in 50% Māori.
LEVEL 4 Advanced Intermediate - has intermediate knowledge around active and descriptive sentences, can use tense markers, extended knowledge of useful instruction, understands stative and location sentences and with expanded knowledge around negations - course delivered in 75% Māori.

Weekly online Classes - 2 hour online lesson with expert Māori language instructor and your classmates.
Learner-led online platform - access supportive resources at your own leisure with tasks to complete between every online session.

All in-person learning sessions are delivered online on the same day and time every week during the six-week course.
Every other aspect of the course is to be completed online in your own time wherever you can access a computer.
We are holding three series of courses during 2025, places are limited, so if you don’t get your initial date, try for a course later in the year.

Kura Ako will be providing support for the following levels:
• LEVELS 1-2 Beginner — very little to basic communication skills / working knowledge
• LEVELS 3-4 Advanced Beginner — good to very good command / good working knowledge
