  • Day One: Pōhiri & Whakawhanaungatanga

    • Formal welcome onto Te Ara o Tāwhaki Marae

    • Introduction to course structure & tikanga

    • Foundations of whaikōrero & karanga – roles, responsibilities, and regional variations

  • Day Two: Refining Your Craft

    • Whaikōrero & Karanga Techniques – structuring delivery, incorporating whakapapa, whakataukī, and karakia

    • Guest lecture: Sir Tīmoti Kāretu - Evolution of oratory and maintaining linguistic integrity

    • Practical application & role-playing exercises – live practice in pōhiri scenarios

    • Personalised mentoring & feedback – one-on-one coaching with experienced kaikōrero and kaikaranga

  • Day Three: Standing in Your Mana

    • Formal presentations in a marae setting – deliver your whaikōrero or karanga in a full pōhiri setting

    • Review & reflection – final feedback and strategies for continued development

    • Poroporoaki & whakawātea – whakawhanaungatanga and next steps for ongoing learning

  • Kura Tahito is a three-day workshop held by Māori language and cultural experts to provide you with in-depth knowledge around your role and responsibilities on the marae.

    Including: whaikōrero, karanga, kawa, and tikanga.

  • Registrations are open to: 

    Anyone with any level of Māori language and customs and protocol knowledge, who want to better understand Māori oratory, customs, and marae responsibilities.

    Due to limited space of participants, on receipt Kura Tahito will confirm your enrolment. If we exceed the amount of spaces and we are able to keep your information for our records if any spaces become available, and for any similar kaupapa offered by Kura Tikanga.
